While it is true that the argument can be austere and frequently recitative, this sobriety is justified to honour a hard-won but challenging campaign that must be recalled. Nate Powell's semi-realistic black and white drawings and layout add a powerful symbolism to the work. Without much pace or humour, this first part of the trilogy offers a solid base for those who want to grasp the struggle for civil rights in the USA.
