Lady Mechanika, the unique survivor of the experiments of a mad scientist, pursues a creature that is causing chaos in the city while avoiding the minions of Lord Blackpool, a wealthy magnate. When she manages to corner the creature, she discovers that it can speak and calls itself Ucky. However, before Lady Mechanika can learn more about its origins, the monster is shot and killed by one of Lord Blackpool's men.

Even though Lady Mechanika T1 Le mystère du corps mécanique generated a considerable amount of excitement, I have to say that I was not particularly impressed. Granted, the steampunk universe is rare in the world of comics, and Joe Benitez's artwork is undeniably well-executed, with highly detailed costumes. However, as a whole, the work is somewhat uneven and fails to fully convince. The scenery is sometimes lacking in detail, and the story, while promising with a mysterious, amnesiac heroine, does not always manage to keep the reader engaged. The text is sometimes overpowering, and the narrative lacks a bit of punch. That being said, for fans of steampunk and strong female characters, this first volume can be an enjoyable read.
